How we research and rank
ReefGrade does not run this equipment on a test system. We work from documented sources: manufacturer specifications, published PAR and flow data, independent lab and third-party measurements where they exist, and what long-running reef keepers report about skimmate dryness, dosing accuracy, footprint, and parameter stability. Marketing copy is never taken at face value.
Who writes these picks
ReefGrade is written and maintained by its editorial team. We publish under the ReefGrade name rather than a personal byline, because our rankings come from documented research rather than one person's hands-on experience. Where a specification, measurement, or figure appears in a guide, it comes from the manufacturer or a cited source, not from our own bench.
What we score on
Every pick is judged on the same criteria. We weight them by what actually matters for the way you will use the gear, then write up the tradeoffs honestly.
Performance vs. rated spec
Manufacturer claims (tank size rating, flow rate, PAR output) are read against community-reported performance across tank sizes and coral types, and gaps between the two are called out.
Parameter impact
For consumables and dosing products, we assess the documented effect on calcium, alkalinity, magnesium, nitrate, and phosphate, the five parameters that determine coral health, using published composition data and reef-keeper reports.
Footprint and compatibility
Equipment must fit the sump or tank dimensions it claims to fit. Published skimmer footprint, light coverage area, and pump head height are checked against the dimensions of common tank and sump configurations.
Controller and ecosystem integration
We note which products the manufacturer documents as integrating with Neptune Apex, HYDROS, and the myAI and Mobius apps, since ecosystem fit affects long-term usability for serious reefers.
Value across the upgrade path
Price is weighed against where a product sits on the reefer upgrade journey, whether beginner, established, or advanced SPS, not just against competitors at the same price point.
How our picks work
Each category roundup is ranked by our editorial score. The highest-scored option carries the Top Pick badge. Separately, the option that delivers the most for the money carries the Best Value badge. They are often different products on purpose: the best-scored is not always the smartest buy for most people, and we tell you which is which.
What we never do
