What we score on
Every pick is judged on the same criteria. We weight them by what actually matters for the way you will use the gear, then write up the tradeoffs honestly.
Performance vs. rated spec
We compare manufacturer claims (tank size rating, flow rate, PAR output) against community-reported real-world performance across tank sizes and coral types.
Parameter impact
For consumables and dosing products, we assess the documented effect on calcium, alkalinity, magnesium, nitrate, and phosphate -- the five parameters that determine coral health.
Footprint and compatibility
Equipment must fit the sump or tank dimensions it claims to fit. Skimmer footprint, light coverage area, and pump head height are verified against common tank and sump configurations.
Controller and ecosystem integration
We note which products integrate with Neptune Apex, HYDROS, and the myAI and Mobius apps, since ecosystem fit affects long-term usability for serious reefers.
Value across the upgrade path
